What is Sports Chiropractic?

Sports Chiropractors are doctors of chiropractic who have specialized interest and post-graduate training in sports injuries and physical fitness. Their involvement helps athletes excel in reaching their goals. They are experts in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

Advanced Levels of Competency

To specialize in the area of sports chiropractic, the doctor must pass comprehensive examinations administered by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. There are two levels of competency in sports chiropractic. The Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) has completed 100 hours of postdoctoral education and must pass a board examination.

At the highest level of achievement, the doctor has completed over 300 hours of didactic study and 100 hours of field experience to become a Diplomat of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (DACBSP). The DACBSP must pass a rigorous written and practical examination and must publish a paper in a clinical journal.

Upon reaching either the CCSP or DACBSP level, the sports chiropractor maintains the highest level of competency and remains abreast of the latest research and developments through continuing education and field experience.

The Focus of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care focuses on the maintenance of fitness and health by improving the biomechanics of the spine and skeletal system. The relationship between joint function in our body, especially along the spine, and the responsiveness of our nervous system to react to our environment, is enhanced by chiropractic care.

Sports injuries, and the rigors of athletic training, typically disturb normal body mechanics. Because of their expertise and extensive training in neuromusculoskeletal conditions, sports chiropractors are uniquely skilled in treating the athlete. When injuries do occur, prompt evaluation and treatment by a qualified sports chiropractor will support a quick recovery and resumption of normal activities.

What can a Sports Chiropractor contribute to an individual athlete or team?

The sports chiropractor receives postgraduate education in the treatment of conditions related to body mechanics, diagnosis, emergency procedures, preparticipation evaluation, rehabilitation, injury prevention, physical therapy, nutrition, joint supports and taping, exercise prescription and training.

The sports chiropractor's extensive specialized training affords the athlete the best care, whether on or off the field, utilizing modern methods of health care, without fear of drug reaction, loss of alertness or athletic disqualification.

Where can I find a Sports Chiropractor?

If you are interested in finding out how much difference a sports chiropractor can make for you or your athletes, please contact your local sports chiropractor, Dr. Wayne Huber, or call the ACA Sports Council, or visit the ACA Sports Council website for a referral in your area.

The American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness

The American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness promotes professionalism among chiropractors through its education programs. The ACA Sports Council also works closely with athletic organizations and allied health organizations to promote a better understanding of the value of chiropractic care in athletic training and treatment.

Who can benefit from Sports Chiropractic?

Many professional athletic and sports organizations recognize the value of chiropractic care in correcting and preventing injuries. Chiropractic care can be beneficial for both amateur and professional athletes engaged in all kinds of sports activities. Chiropractors work in concert with athletic trainers and their team of sports professionals, physical therapists, massage therapists and other health care professionals to provide the best treatment for each individual athlete.

Whether you are a member of a team or participate in an individual sport, whether you are a professional athlete or "weekend warrior", you can benefit from sports chiropractic care.
